The films also showcase European-émigré-to-Hollywood talent behind the camera. In The Raven, he is a murderer on the run whose plastic surgery goes wrong.īoth actors look like they are enjoying themselves immensely. In The Black Cat he plays a necrophile, Satanist modernist architect who ends up being flayed alive. Just don’t expect too much from the Edgar Allan Poe association.īoris Karloff puts in two riveting performances. These three 1930s horror films from Universal Pictures are great vehicles for the creepy, leering Bela Lugosi, who spits out some wonderful camp-horror one liners. Robert Florey, Edgar G Ulmer, Lew Landers, US, 1932, 1934, 1935, 189 minutes combined Who would want to face up to that heaviness? “No one in our family,” he says, “and very few folk in this nation has any desire to reckon with the weight of where we’ve been.” But the title also refers to history, to the unfinished legacies of slavery, to the burden black Americans have to bear from living in a country that distrusts, demonises and all too often destroys them. Later he will get bigger, at one point reaching 319lb. He himself is heavy: the book begins with the 11-year-old Laymon weighing 208lb. And heaviness is at the centre of his autobiography. This emphasis on truth – turning it into a kind of theology – is a heavy burden. The lies of his mother, of employers, of many of the people around him: these are what he wants to dispel. Tempted as he might be “to do that old black work of pandering and lying to folk who pay us to pander and lie to them every day”, he can’t – or won’t – go down that road. It’s not about creating “a fantastic literary spectacle”. It isn’t in prose like that of William Faulkner, which, when he was younger, made him “feel drunker than a white man”. As far as he’s concerned, it isn’t to be found in the genre of the American memoir (although the book is subtitled with that label). K iese Laymon thinks a lot about the truth. But on the morning Avery plans to jump into the river near her college campus, the world discovers there are only nine days left to live: an asteroid is headed for Earth, and no one can stop it. I gave it 5 stars without even a pause, so I’m not saying it’s a bad book, but it’s a very different book, and if you’re not someone who likes to be absolutely baffled, and you don’t want to be getting the previous book out to check things and pulling increasingly distressed faces so your boyfriend asks if you’re ok… this might not be the book for you. In fact, important consumer note here: if you liked Gideon the Ninth and are wanting to read Harrow because it’ll be more of the same – with a fairly linear adventure/mystery narrative – it might be worth being cautious about Harrow. I did not go in expecting a batshit book in Harrow, but I’m fundamentally inclined towards liking nonsense like this, so I was happy to roll with it. I… have been known to like a batshit book, in my time my unwavering love for Vellum, possibly the most batshit book I’ve ever read*, is a testament to that. The art really does remain gorgeous… I originally had Gideon on kindle, but bought it in hardback so, when I pre-ordered Harrow, I could have a lovely matching set He's a great friend and has a sweet personality and loves to make those around him laugh. I think as the series continues I will grow to love him. I really like Jamie! In the first book I liked him, and in this book he grew on me even more. I won't say much more, as it will give away the story. In I Even Funnier, Jamie is preparing for the semi-finals in Las Vegas for The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic Contest, trying to ace his exams and trying to find his way through the obstacles in middle-school. I was worried that the I Funny books would be too "middle-grade" with immature humour and no depth, but I surprisingly enjoyed it! And in my opinion, the sequel to I Funny, I Even Funnier, was even better. At the time, I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy it or not, but after reading the first book I was feeling less weary towards it. I received I Even Funnier a few weeks ago to review. Among these are 'The Bloody Chamber', 'The Courtship of Mr Lyon', 'The Tiger's Bride', 'Puss in Boots', 'The Erl-King', 'The Snow Child', 'The Lady of the House of Love', 'The Werewolf', 'The Company of Wolves' and 'Wolf-Alice'. This Audible exclusive adaptation is narrated by legendary actors, Richard Armitage and Emilia Fox, who take on different chapters of the audiobook. A collection of short stories, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories was first published in 1979 and awarded the Cheltenham Festival Literary Prize. |
