A 5-Heart book leaves me with a book hangover where I can’t stop thinking about the characters and plot for a quite a while after I’ve finished reading. Recently someone asked me what I consider the criteria for a 5-Heart (star) book. Life has taught Ondro not to hope, but then, he never believed in love at first sight either…. But with their separation looming, confessing his feelings would only lead to pain and humiliation. Soon, he catches a glimpse of the home he longs for. When he is put in a position to offer Jamie comfort without hope of recompense, Ondro doesn’t hesitate. Jaded Ondro never would have guessed he could fall in love during a brief layover-until now. During a layover in Basel, Switzerland, he meets Jamie, an American living in Scotland who is as brilliant as he is beautiful. The demons proved impossible to outrun, though, and now, desperate for somewhere to belong, Ondro is returning to start over. Eight years ago, Ondro Smrek fled Slovakia and the bigotry that drove his first lover to take his own life. She thinks it is Adam Baye standing just outside the camera's range but when Adam goes missing, it soon becomes clear that something deep and sinister has infected their community. Meanwhile, browsing through an online memorial for Spencer put together by his classmates, Betsy Hill is struck by a photo that appears to have been taken on the night of her son's death and he wasn't alone. They install a sophisticated spy program on Adam's computer, and within days they are jolted by a message from an unknown correspondent addressed to their son - 'Just stay quiet and all safe.' But their sixteen-year-old son Adam has been unusually distant lately, and after the suicide of his classmate Spencer Hill - the latest in a string of issues at school - they can't help but worry. Tia and Mike Baye never imagined they'd become the type of overprotective parents who spy on their kids. Jackson’s style of writing is clearly the primary appeal for this novel. It’s hard to separate out the four appeal elements for this book, because they’re all so interwoven and dependent on one another. Tales of Friendship with Winnie the Pooh is a Disney Junior short series inspired by the Winnie the Pooh franchise. This isn't the first bizarro-world videogame take on a traditional children's story-that honor, I believe, goes to American McGee's Alice (opens in new tab)-and it's not the only one currently in the works, either: Pinnochio is getting a similar treatment in the upcoming soulslike Lies of P (opens in new tab), which is set to come out in August. It's all a bit of a muddle: Plagiarism Today (opens in new tab) has a good breakdown of how it all works. After Rhys Frake-Waterfields Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey received abysmal reviews from the public, it may be a shock that an R-rated series called Christopher Robin is coming out starring characters from the 100 Acre Wood. But stories and characters that were published later remain bound by copyright, which is why Tigger isn't in Hundred Acre Wood despite being such a well-known character: He didn't appear until 1928, so won't enter the public domain until January 1, 2024. Set in the 17th century, this novel opens with the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan’s daugher, Jahanara, telling her granddaughters the story of her life while divulging to them their true identity as heirs to the throne of Hindustan.
